Increase Your Email Open Rates – 3 Techniques to Write Better Subject Lines

Posted on May 28, 2010 by darrenolander

Subject lines are essential to getting your emails opened and your marketing message read. Without the right subject line, you’re going to have a useless list. It’s always said that the money is in your list, but the list will do you no good if you’re your emails aren’t being opened. If you’re having trouble with getting your list to open your messages, use the follow three techniques to boost your open rates, get more readers and make more money online.

1. Make sure your emails aren’t spammy looking.

Even if an email comes through your recipient’s spam filters, if it looks anywhere close to spam then it’s unlikely the email will get opened. If you want to see what spam email subject lines look like, just take a look at your own email spam folder. You’ll notice that the messages seem to have lots of capital letters and useless punctuation. They all seem very urgent and pleading. In order to make sure that your emails don’t appear spam like, be sure to keep your subject lines personable, friendly and somewhat consistent. This means if you always announce your newsletter name in your subject line (ie: Money Making Newsletter Issue #26) then you should use it each time.

2. Make your subject lines personable.

Virtually every email autoresponder program allows users to insert names into subject lines. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t do it as well. When people sign up for your list, you ask them to insert their name and their email address. Their name that you receive when they sign up can be automatically inserted into subject lines. This level of personalization will make your list members take interest and make them more likely to open your email.

3. Use sales letter techniques to increase curiosity and urgency.

Sales letters are very good at encouraging people to read further and get to the call to action at the end of the letter. Although your call to action in the case of an email marketing message is very small (you just want the person to open the email and read it), you can still learn a lot from sales letter techniques. The headlines are always attention getting and leading into the rest of the sales letter. Your subject lines should attract attention (without being spammy) and want the reader to click the email to open more.

You can accomplish this by asking a question or giving your reader a sneak peak at the content inside.

For example, you can use one of the following for email subject lines:

Is Your Kitchen as Clean as It Should Be?

Read on to Find the Niche You’ve Been Missing Out On….

Of course, you should keep in mind that your success with your list with any of these methods may vary. Each niche list is a little bit different, so you need to test out these methods and track your results. Most autoresponder programs offer comprehensive tracking methods that you can use to test your open rates and track your results.

He’ll teach you things like:

* A simple way to create an “email blueprint” that practically writes the email for you!

* The single biggest mistake people make with subject lines that guarantees your email won’t get opened.

* A simple trick that will keep your readers eyes glued to the screen and force them to read every word! Hint: it involves using the three “magicwords”.
